What is yellow fever vaccination?

Yellow fever is a serious viral infection spread by mosquitoes in parts of Africa, South America, and Asia. The vaccine protects you by helping your body build immunity to the virus before you travel to at-risk areas. A single dose provides lifelong protection for most people, and you'll receive an official yellow fever certificate to carry with you. This certificate is recognised by health authorities worldwide and may be required for entry into certain countries.
/02

Who is it for?

Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for adults and children travelling to or living in countries where the virus is present. Whether you need the vaccine depends on your destination, the areas you plan to visit, and the time of year you're travelling. Our team will discuss your travel plans with you to confirm whether vaccination is right for you.

You may benefit from yellow fever vaccination if you meet any of the following:

  • Travelling to endemic regions in Africa or South America
  • Planning to visit certain parts of Asia where yellow fever risk exists
  • Spending time in rural or forested areas during your trip
  • Travelling for more than a few days in at-risk countries
  • Working in healthcare or research in endemic regions
  • Unsure whether your destination requires the vaccine

Speak to our team during your appointment to confirm whether the vaccine is suitable for your travel plans.

How the vaccination works

The yellow fever vaccine is given as a single injection, usually into the upper arm. The appointment takes around 15 minutes in total. You'll be asked about your medical history and any medications you're taking to ensure the vaccine is safe for you. After your injection, we'll give you your official yellow fever certificate, which is valid for life in most cases. You should allow a few days for your body to build immunity, so plan your vaccination at least 10 days before you travel.

Things to know before your appointment

The yellow fever vaccine is very safe, and serious side effects are rare. Some people experience mild reactions such as arm soreness, low-grade fever, or headache in the days after vaccination. These usually settle within a few days. A small number of people may not be able to have the vaccine due to medical conditions or allergies, which is why we'll discuss your health history with you beforehand.

Standard reasons we may advise against the vaccine:

  • Severe egg allergy
  • Weakened immune system
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Recent live vaccines
  • Acute illness or fever

If you have any of these concerns, let us know when you book so we can discuss your options.

After your vaccination

Most people feel fine immediately after the vaccine. You can return to normal activities straight away. Mild side effects such as arm soreness or slight tiredness may appear within a day or two and usually resolve quickly. Drink plenty of fluids and take paracetamol or ibuprofen if you experience any discomfort. If you develop a high fever, severe rash, or any symptoms that concern you in the weeks after vaccination, contact your GP.
