What is the cholera vaccine?

Cholera is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated water and food, most commonly found in parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The oral cholera vaccine we offer is a safe, effective way to protect yourself if you're travelling to areas where cholera is a risk. The vaccine works by helping your immune system recognise and fight the cholera bacterium. It's given as a drink (oral suspension) rather than an injection, making it straightforward and quick to administer. Protection builds over one to two weeks after vaccination, so it's best to have your appointment at least a week before you travel.
/02

Who is it for?

The cholera vaccine is recommended for adults and children aged two years and over who are travelling to countries where cholera is endemic or where outbreaks have been reported. It's particularly important if you'll be staying in areas with limited access to clean water or sanitation.

You may benefit from cholera vaccination if you meet any of the following:

  • Travelling to Africa, Asia, or the Middle East where cholera is present
  • Planning to stay in areas with limited clean water or sanitation
  • Working in healthcare, humanitarian, or disaster-relief roles in high-risk regions
  • Visiting friends or family in endemic areas
  • Travelling for extended periods (more than a few weeks)
  • Have a weakened immune system (speak to our team about suitability)

If you're unsure whether you need the vaccine, our team can review your travel plans and advise you.

How the vaccine works and what to expect

The cholera vaccine is given as an oral suspension, which you'll drink at your appointment. The process takes just a few minutes. You'll be asked about your medical history and any current medications to ensure the vaccine is suitable for you. After vaccination, you should avoid eating and drinking for 30 minutes to allow the vaccine to work effectively. Protection typically develops within one to two weeks, so we recommend booking your appointment at least seven to ten days before travel. The vaccine protects for up to two years, though some people may need a booster dose depending on their risk and the guidance for their destination.

Things to know before your appointment

The cholera vaccine is very safe, but like all medicines, it can cause side effects in some people. Most side effects are mild and short-lived.

Common side effects and contraindications:

  • Mild stomach upset
  • Nausea or diarrhoea
  • Headache
  • Fever (rare)
  • Acute diarrhoea or vomiting (wait until resolved before vaccination)
  • Severe allergic reaction to vaccine components (very rare)
  • Immunosuppressive therapy (discuss with our team)

If you have a fever, acute diarrhoea, or vomiting, we'll reschedule your appointment until you've recovered. If you're taking immunosuppressive medications or have a weakened immune system, speak to our team before booking to check whether the vaccine is suitable for you.

After your vaccination

After your appointment, you can return to normal activities straight away. Avoid eating and drinking for 30 minutes to maximise the vaccine's effectiveness. If you experience any unusual symptoms in the days following vaccination, contact us or speak to your GP. Keep a record of your vaccination (you'll receive a certificate) as some countries may ask for proof of cholera vaccination on entry. If you're travelling to multiple high-risk countries or planning further trips within two years, ask our team about booster doses.
