What is anti malarial medication?

Malaria is a serious infection spread by mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical parts of the world. Anti malarial medication reduces your risk of catching it when you travel to affected areas. The type of medication, dose, and how long you take it depend on where you're going, how long you'll be there, and your own health. We'll assess your travel plans and medical history, then prescribe the most suitable option for you. You'll start the medication before you travel, continue whilst you're away, and finish the course after you return home. Taking it correctly is key to protection.

Who is it for?

You're a good fit for this service if you're travelling to a malaria risk area and need protection.

  • Travelling to sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, or Central/South America
  • Planning a trip of any length to a malaria zone
  • Want personalised advice on mosquito avoidance and other precautions
  • Have not travelled to a malaria area before and need guidance
  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have existing health conditions (we'll advise on suitability)
  • Prefer a private appointment outside NHS waiting times

What to expect at your appointment

We'll start by asking about your destination, travel dates, and any previous malaria medication or side effects you've had. We'll also check your current medicines and any allergies, and ask about your general health. Once we've assessed your risk, we'll recommend the most suitable anti malarial for you and explain how to take it, when to start, and what side effects to watch for. We'll give you written information to take away, and you can ask any questions. The appointment usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Things to know before you go

Anti malarial medication is not 100% protective, so it's important to also avoid mosquito bites. We'll advise you on insect repellent, clothing, and bed nets. If you develop fever, chills, or flu-like symptoms during or after your trip, see a doctor straight away and tell them you've been to a malaria area. Some anti malarias can cause side effects such as nausea, headache, or vivid dreams. These are usually mild and settle quickly. Serious side effects are rare. Always finish your course even if you feel well, and don't share your medication with others.

Standard reasons we may not prescribe anti malarial medication:

  • Severe liver disease
  • Severe kidney disease
  • Certain heart rhythm conditions
  • Known allergy to anti malarial drugs
  • Uncontrolled epilepsy (some medications)
  • Porphyria

If you have any of these, we'll discuss alternatives or refer you to your GP.

After your appointment

You'll leave with your prescription and written guidance on how to take your medication, when to start, and what to do if you have side effects or feel unwell abroad. Keep your appointment notes with your travel documents. If you develop any symptoms during your trip, contact a local doctor or hospital. When you return home, finish your course of anti malarial as advised, even if you feel fine. If you become unwell within a month of returning, tell your GP or seek urgent care and mention your travel history.
